Septic system maintenance tips for the winter

Keeping your septic system in good condition is your responsibility, and a huge one for all that matters. However, maintaining your septic system during the winter season can be trickier than usual. In this article we have few tips for you to ensure that your septic system will continue to run smoothly throughout the winter season.

Before winter is a good time to get your septic tank cleaned and pumped. If your tank has accumulated too much sludge, problems may arise during winter. Keep in mind that fixing a failed septic system in cold weather can prove difficult and expensive.

Since your main pipe line can freeze during the winter months, it is important to take certain precautions. Tanks should be cleaned every three years; however, this can become a yearly task for some houses. Depending on the depth of the pipe and the depth of the frost, there might be more or less chance of freezing if there is snow on the ground. Keep in mind that Snow can insulate the soil. However, compacted snow will not insulate as well as uncompacted snow, henceforth driving any equipment over the system will compact the snow and send the frost down deeper into the soil.

To make sure when was the last time you cleaned, measure the depth of your tank sludge by wrapping a white terry cloth around a wooden or metal pole, long enough to reach the bottom of your tank. Use an inspection pipe to reach the bottom of the tank with the pole. Turn the pole slowly three to five resolutions, let it sit for a minute then slowly withdraw it. If the sludge thickness is greater than 12 inches you will need to call your trusted septic emergencies professional. Remember that cleaning your tanks is more than just pumping out the liquid and a professional should handle the entire process.

Winter pumps are possible if necessary, but is highly recommended to do it before the colder months start. Not to mention that it will be cheaper too. Since effluent in your pipes can end up freezing, reduce the amount of water that is being flushed into your tank during the freezing months. Also, remember that little leaks like a toilet or showerhead leak could easily freeze within the pipes and can cause the pipe to freeze solid.

If any emergencies arise during the winter months, call your septic system professional and remember to always follow the instructions below:

  • Never use an open flame to try and warm up a frozen pipe.
  • Don’t pour antifreeze, salt or any other common winter additive into the system.
  • Never pump sewage onto the ground surface.
  • Don’t try to thaw the system or any pipes with open fires.
  • Avoid running water too often try unfreezing the system.
