Different variations of the septic tank have been around for centuries but what we know today as a septic tank first came into use in 1860. It is said to have originated in France and its creation is credited to John Mouras. Mouras built a prototype made of concrete and fabricated piping out of clay. He added this never before seen tool into his backyard and it started as a test. He recorded the results but it wasn’t until a few years after installing it that he dismantled the unit completely and the results astounded his peers. Mouras discovered the the tank was empty of solid waste.
Mouras was both happy and excited so he quickly got to work getting a patent and approached the town scientist in 1881. This created uproar amongst the town people waiting to get a piece of this (at the time) remarkable invention. In 1883, the septic tank made its way to America and years later, to Africa.
Today, septic systems are found in 25% of all homes in North America. This includes suburbs and small towns as well as rural areas. They are less common in cities but one major city known for its septic systems is Indianipolis where the majority of the city’s neighborhoods are still on separate septic systems.
A septic tank usually has between 1000 to 2000 gallons of water and it will have two inspection openings, one inlet opening coming from the house and the other going to the distribution box. For those unaware, the distribution box is the junction between the septic systems to the drain field.
